6 Easy Swaps for A Natural and Sustainable Home

I talk a lot about sustainability on my blog, and for good reason. It's something that I'm passionate about and truly believe in. I believe that we should be taking care of our world that we live in, and we should be mindful of the resources that we use.

But it shouldn't stop there. We should be taking care of ourselves and our bodies. Over the last few years, I've been making switches to non-toxic products. These are products that don't contain harmful chemicals like parabens and phthalates. I do my best to find items that are cruelty-free and vegan, as well.

It can seem like a shock to make the switch, but I think that a little bit goes a long way! You don't need to clear your cabinets out right away, these can be things you incorporate in time. When you are finished with an item, make sure to buy a more natural and sustainable item next time. Remember, it's always more sustainable to use something that is already made. Don't just throw items out! Donate them, give them to other friends or families if they want them, etc.

So what are some easy items to switch out you might ask? Here are some of my recommendations below!

My favorite non-toxic brand? I love the brand Hello. The black color may put you off, but the charcoal is made from sustainable bamboo which is a natural detox and odor definer. There's also coconut oil in it, which has been shown to whiten teeth. I've also tried the mouthwash that works wonders!

Homemade cleaner

During these times, a cleaner is hard to come by! We make our own, and it's seriously so simple! We start by taking lemon peels that we use and putting them in a jar. We fill the jar up with with vinegar and let it sit for a few weeks. We then strain the peels out, and add in water and a splash of apple cider vinegar. It's that simple!

Man, I have to say, this has been the hardest one! I've tried several deodorants, and the best one that I've tried is the Crystal one. I still am not 100% on it, but it does the job. I just feel like it's one that I have to reapply. It's mineral-free and doesn't contain any aluminum. Another plus is it goes on clear and doesn't leave white streaks!

Shampoo, Conditioner and Body Wash

This is one that was tough for me at first. I have very thick wavy hair, and I couldn't find a shampoo that would clean my hair well enough (or that was actually affordable!) ! I ended up finding Thrive's and I was so shocked that it worked! I also love the lavender smell.

Growing your own fruits and veggies

If you've been following along on my Instagram stories, you would have seen that I'm growing our veggies from seeds this year! We started our first garden last year, and we did pretty well! This year, I decided that I wanted to take it up a notch and grow them from seeds. By growing your plants, it ensures that you have organic fruits and veggies that aren't grown with pesticides. You also cut down on packaging, which is another plus.

Skincare and Makeup

This is going to be the longest and hardest change. With so many products out there, it can be overwhelming as to where to start. There are so many ingredients in our skincare and makeup, and you have to look at it as your skin is absorbing it. Our skin is the largest organ in our body, and it's vital that we make sure the products we are using have only the best ingredients. My favorites places to shop are Vanity Planet, Beauty Counter, Follian and Credo Beauty.
