How to Use Color in an Open Concept Home

Open concepts can be a tough cookie when it comes to color and making sure things coordinate! Since the rooms are open and flowing together, you want to make sure that it doesn't look choppy, but you still want the rooms to have their own space.

I find that a good portion of my clients have an open concept and are confused with how to design around that. They want the dining room to be the dining room, and the living room to be the living room, but they want it to all mesh together.

Here are some tips and tricks on how to keep consistency and flow within your home!

Use it on a unique piece of furniture

VIA EMILY HENDERSON

Do you have a piece of furniture from that flea market? Or maybe it was your grandmothers? Why not try painting and give that a shot! A few weeks ago, I showed you guys how I painted my great grandparent's dresser.

Accent wall

This one is pretty common, and probably the most used way to add some color to an open concept home. But, its for good reason. You can make a bold statement with just one wall!

Rethink your door

VIA KATE MARK INTERIORS

You know, you don't need the standard wood or white door. Think outside the box! Use the door as a way to bring color into the room!

Keep a consistent pallet

VIA STYLE PARK

If you take anything from this post, please listen up. Before you start going crazy and painting every room a different color, sit down and think about what you want your space to invoke. Maybe its an artsy eclectic space where you have loads of vintage items. Or, its a minimalist modern space where less is more and just one piece of color will make all the difference. Whatever it may be, your home should be consistent and holistic.

Don't be afraid to go bold

VIA DOMINO

VIA BLOG LOVIN

I talk about this all the time. Go outside your comfort zone. Try new things. The worst thing that's going to happen is you don't like the color and you repaint. As much as that sucks, you're testing out new things and I think the results are worth it. As long as you're working with someone who you trust, you should be confident that its going to look awesome!

Kitchen cabinets

VIA STUDIO MCGEE

A cool color for kitchen cabinets is a must if you want to add color in your home. I feel like theres so many colors that can work. Even doing a small piece like the island can make such a cool feature!

Make a moody dining room

VIA APARTMENT THERAPY

VIA MY MODERN HOME DECOR

I absolutely love love dark, moody dining rooms. There's something about them that's really appealing to me. It makes the space seem really cozy like you just want to curl up and linger after dinner to have a long conversation. I don't know, that sounds weird as I write it, but it still holds true for me!
